The name 'Blacktop' is given to the 5th generation 4A-GE engines.
The 'Blacktop' 4A-GE are a further development of the 'Silvertop' 4A-GE motor. The Silvertop was the first 4A-GE with 5 valves per cylinder. But Toyota felt that they could do more with that engine, so they took another look at it, what resulted in the Blacktop 4A-GE 20V.
As you can see in the picture above, the Blacktop gets its name from its black valvecovers with the black plate in between, so the entire top of the engine is black.
The main differences with the Silvertop 20V engines are: The blacktop is MAP controlled, has lighter internals and bigger intakes. The Blacktop aslo has a more advanced VVT system. Both 20V engines have ITB's. The Blacktop was mainly installed in the Japanese AE111 Corolla FX (The E11 is produced from 1997 until 2001).
